Island of the Blue Dolphins

Trey is starting this book tomorrow and I'm too cheap to buy anymore literature studies, so I'm making up my own. Please feel free to use this if you need it.

Island of the Blue Dolphins
Chapter one
1. How did Ramo describe the sea?
2. Who came on the ship?
3. Who are the people that live on the island?_
4. How many names did a member of the tribe have?
5. Which name was not used and why?
6. What do the men on the ship want to do?
7. What do the men on the ship and the leader of the tribe agree to? 8. The last paragraph of the chapter, Karana runs to the mesa. Look up mesa in a dictionary and write the definition:

Chapter two

2. What was the island calledWhat two reasons was it called that
3. What did the Aleut and the Ghalas-at argue over?

Because of the argument, the authors states that it will bring trouble to the Ghalas-at people. What do you think will happen?

Another day.....

Another dollar? Another one sick? We've been passing this bug around the house for over a week now and I'm done; I don't want to play anymore. Last night, I was the one to get it. Fever, chills, and headache all night long. At least it was just that I guess. I feel better today, but not the greatest. We were supposed to be going to the Ear, Nose and Throat doctor for Princess, but I just can't do it right now.

I've decided to update you in some pictures, because that's all I seem to be able to do right now! Here's little Miss Chunky Monkey-this is her little nickname right now. I love baby fat rolls!

Yesterday, Little Miss Trouble came downstairs with scissors, cutting towards her head. Where she found them, I have no idea. I think that they stash them somewhere when they turn two, so that they can cut their hair. Yes, this has happened before. This is what I saw:

Unfortunately, this picture doesn't even do it justice. She cut right down about 1/2 inch from her head. Off to get a haircut we went!

The poor woman was very upset and wanted to try to save it. I knew better, I'm experienced at this. Better to cut it and start over. Perhaps, now her hair will grow in a little thicker!

THis is the back now. Its actually tapered a little because of the shortness of how she cut it. It looks cute, but I miss her little long hair!

And here's the new look:

One can only laugh....

Tuesday nights are usually busy for us. Taekwondo is from 4-4:30 for Bug-a-Bug. We run home and eat and its out the door again to drop the oldest girls at Awana and TL at Boy Scouts. I usually take the hour that I have to run errands, which I was planning to do last night since daddy's gone for six weeks and I would only have two kids.

Little Miss Trouble had fallen asleep at 4:30 and missed dinner, so I decided to roll through Burger King to get her some nuggets and fries to munch on while we were shopping; and silently hoping that she wouldn't run all over the store then. TL was still with me as I had a few minutes before dropping him off.

I turned to see "the look" on Little Miss Trouble's face and then the floodgates opened. Vomit everywhere, but mostly on herself. Alot of it. I pulled over and cleaned her up as best as I could. We were about two minutes from home, so, I ran TL over to Boy Scouts and went home. The scent was strong, but not too bad, I've smelled alot worse. TL had his head hanging out the window yelling, "It smells so bad, I think I can taste it in my mouth." Okay, no need to get dramatic here.

Got her home, cleaned her up. Went another round. Went to bed, had another round. That's when she decided to share her fun with Bug-a-Bug. Such a nice sweet girl, wanting to share. Bug-a-bug decided that after one lightning round, that the Vomit Game wasn't all it was cracked up to be, and slept the rest of the night.

It's now 9am and all my kids and still sleeping. And I'm letting them!

Cheap Olympics Stuff

I realize that I haven't posted in a while-its been busy and I wanted the kids to finish a few projects to post picturs of them on here.

I did want to offer some cheap suggestions for a Winter Olympics study. www.Currclick.com is offering a Winter Olympics lapbook on sale for $4.00. It is a wonderful study of the history of the olympics, however, not much on Canada there. Never fear-they also offer a lapbook on Canada for $1!! Can't refuse that deal!! Enjoy!!

The Law of Physics

The Law of Physics states that "when your spouse deploys, even for the shortest amount of time, one of the following will happen: the car will break down, a major appliance will break down, or most commonly, a child will get ill."

Thursday night (aka Friday morning at 1am), I took hubby to the base. He had a bunch of work to do before leaving early Friday am for San Diego and then some desert part of CA. Rather than let me sleep for a few hours, and get me up at 4am to take him, we decided the lesser of two evils was one am. We woke up TL to keep an eye out, put the dog on high alert, and headed out the door. Less than twenty minutes later, I was back home, brushing my teeth, eager to climb into bed and pass out. That's when the law took affect.

Now, generally, its a day or so before things happen. Took a few weeks after he left once, for Princess to break her arm. Strep throat for the oldest three took place a month after he left another time.

Not this time!! He hadn't even been gone for thirty minutes!! And here was Little Miss Trouble throwing up-all over my bed!!!!

She did end up throwing up a second time about an hour later, but never ran a fever and was totally fine yesterday. I really think something in her tummy didn't agree with her.

I'm praying nothing else goes wrong!

Free Restaurant/Library/Store items!!

Please check out the following link!
http://homeschooling.about.com/od/freeprintables/ss/restaurant_8.htm

My girls are really into playing restaurant and library lately. I just found this website and printed off a ton of free items that they can use to play with. I will use the menu for now, but I plan on having them make their own from food ads in the next few weeks!!

Enjoy!

Wow!!

What a crazy busy year 2009 was. 2010 looks alot more relaxed-only because we're not moving from overseas back to the states or traveling from Iowa to Virgina then back to Washington state in our camper. Still, it will be busy with kids activities, camping, and of course, daddy traveling.

Kevin leaves tomorrow for six weeks. Sunny San Diego and then Fallon, NV are on tap. In March, he gets to go to Key West. Yeah, I'm really feeling for him. I did tease him, that the college girls on spring break would be less than impressed with a slightly out of shape, graying, balding 40s guy strutting his stuff on the beach. He laughed and thought that was funny. He'll actually probably be on the golf course instead of the beach.

I will be focusing on my New Year's "resolutions". Which include getting into shape and losing this baby weight, keeping myself from falling behind with homeschooling, college, and housework, reading to the kids more, and doing more inspection instead of expectation from them.

The first two are pretty basic. And I will kill two birds with one stone. I've gotten an exercise bike to do my reading/studying on for college. I cannot sit still and read or study. I've never been able to do that. That's probably why Trey can't either-we just have to move. That's okay, I can get into shape and study too. Great.

Reading to the kids more. Sometime, during this tremendously busy and stessful year, that has totally fallen apart. I have started reading more during the schoolday, but nighttime reading has totally disappeared. And it needs to reappear and fast. I sat down and pulled out all the books I would like to read with the kids. The girls and I will work on finishing Betsy-Tacy, finishing a fairy tale book, and then I think move onto reading Peter Rabbit. Kailyn has a small stack of board books. I need to hit the thrift store to get a few more. Trey and I have several series that we want to read. First, will be the Kingdom series by Chuck Black then onto The Cooper Kids Adventure series by Frank E. Peretti. I also need to get him the next installment of Jonathon Park, because well, we all love that. I'm also looking into the 39 Clues books. Anyone read them? Are they any good? I keep hearing about them! I've also made a list of read aloud for during homeschooling time. We're currently about halfway through Pilgrim's Progress and I'll post this list when we get closer to finishing it.

The last is something I really need to focus on. I've been guilty of giving assignments or chores that I don't follow through to make sure they're done or done properly. I've been caught spending more time than necessary on the computer. From now on, I will only be posting blog entries and checking email. No facebook games, no just blindly sitting and searching for something to read. I need to inspect their work, follow through with them and show a good example. No more just expecting it to be done and getting frustrated because it wasn't or wasn't done correctly, and I waited too long to go over the correct way with them. My own fault and I need to own up to it and fix it. Refocus, recover, reflect.

I'm hoping by typing this into my blog, I will make myself more accountable. So, on Fridays, I will do a Frankly Friday blog. I will post my progress on this list and an update on our homeschooling week. So, needless to say, Friday's blogs may be a bit boring for you to read-sorry in advance.

Hope that you all have a wonderful and blessed week this week!!

Maple Syrup Unit Study

I have alot to post but for today, I'm posting sources for designing a unit on Maple Syrup making. I submit an article each month for our local homeschooling newsletter and I thought it would be fun to share some of the sources that I found.

I have found all kinds of sources for Maple Syrup making, including a family that owns a Maple Syrup farm. Their children are all grown now, but they homeschooled their children and have 10 weeks of lesson plans available on their website!! I’m excited to try some of their activities. What a wonderful resource to use for a fun school day or unit in your home!

Websites:
www.lmsugarbush.com/unitstudy.html
www.maplemuseum.com/history.html
www.massmaple.org
www.mi-maplesyrup.com

Books:
Miracles on Maple Hill by Virginia Sorenson
Maple Moon by Connie Brummel Cook
Sugarbush Spring by Marsha Wilson Chall
Sugar on Snow by Nan Parson Rossiter
From Maple Trees to Maple Syrup by Kristen Thoennes Keller
The Maple Syrup Book by Janet Eagleson and Rosemary Hasner
The Maple Syrup Cookbook by Ken Haednon

In addition, The Old Schoolhouse Magazine has a wonderful article in their Fall 2008 edition. They list all kinds of activities for each subject. Use related words for spelling or vocabulary lessons. Examine the health benefits of using maple syrup over sugar or honey (and I can only imagine the benefits over processed syrup makers). The ideas are endless!! Enjoy!!

Have a wonderful day!
